Facebook, the most popular social network in the world, turns six today. The social hub was officially founded on February 4, 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg and his college roommates.
What used to be called "The Facebook", has done a lot of growing up over the past six years. The site was originally created for students at Harvard University, then expanded to other universities and eventually the world.
Some things that have made the social networking site so successful are very smart business moves, a winning executive team and a founder that hasn't taken his personal success for granted. Through thick and thin the site has overcome obstacles set by bandwidth and competitors like MySpace and Twitter.
With over 300 million users worldwide and a vast network of developers that build applications on Facebook's API platform, this social network has now been deemed "too big to fail" and will soon begin construction on it's very own data center.
Happy Birthday Facebook!
